Rising Obesity and High Prevalence of Diabetes is leading to higher Spend on Healthcare Devices, Pharmaceuticals and Service Providers in Qatar: Ken Research

  • More than 240,000 people in Qatar were known to suffer from diabetes as of 2016. This amounted to more than 20% of the people aged between 20 to 79 years. Moreover, about 44.0% of adult men and 55.0% of adult women were classified as obese or overweight.
  • Medical devices and pharmaceuticals market is almost entirely import driven and is highly dependent on international manufacturers such as Roche, Abbott, Biomeriux, Becton Dickinson, Beckman Coulter, Merck, Sanofi, GSK, Novartis and others.
  • Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) is the largest hospital network in the country. In terms of revenues, private hospital sector generated most of the revenues and comprised of players including Al Ahli Hospital, American Hospital, Aspetar Hospital, Doha Clinic Hospital and Al Emadi Hospital.
Pharmacy retail sector has observed magnificent growth in the last few years owing to elevating demand for pharmaceutical goods, and home use devices. Stand-alone pharmacies accounted for maximum market share in 2016 in terms of revenue, as compared to hospital based pharmacies. Leading stand-alone pharmacy chains included Kulud Pharmacies (IMC), Wellcare Pharmacies and Qatar Pharmacy EST amongst others.

Qatar being a geographically small country with low population advocates the fact that telemedicine centers are not a necessity for the country though yet it is useful for medical second opinion. Telemedicine system for real time evaluation of stroke patients was introduced at Al Khor Hospital in October 2016 to aid patient’s chances of full recovery. Currently, there isn’t any telemedicine center in the country and the technology is used in hospital for stroke management of emergency patients.
In mid-long term, more such public hospital and clinics or health centers are likely to be equipped with telemedicine services to enable faster healthcare services and consultation from hospitals with specialized team of doctors as per the report, Qatar Healthcare Market to 2021 - High Prevalence of Diabetes and Rising Healthcare Infrastructure to Foster Future Growth by Ken Research.
